Zion Without the Crowds
Zion is busy, but not everywhere and not all the time. Here is how to find room to breathe: when to go, what hours to keep, and where.
The Honest Version
Zion is popular, and summer is the peak. But the crowds are far from even. A few habits, taken from what this site's guides already say, make a big difference.
Go Early or Late
Entering before 8 a.m. or after 3 p.m. avoids the worst of the rush. The Watchman Trail hike guide calls it one of the best early-morning hikes for beating the crowds. The Canyon Overlook Trail lot fills at first light in busy season and stays full most of the day, so arriving right at sunrise is your best bet.
Pick Your Days
Weekdays beat weekends year-round, and crowds ease noticeably after Labor Day. Free-entry days are the busiest days, so avoid them if you can. [VERIFY: nps.gov]
Go in Winter
December through February is the quietest stretch by far. Lodging is cheapest, and the shuttle usually pauses so you can drive the scenic road yourself. [VERIFY: nps.gov] Trails are icy in places and days are short, so plan for it. Read Zion in winter.
Try the Shoulder Seasons
October is moderate and November thins further, and the shuttle winds down late in the month. [VERIFY: nps.gov] Fall is also prime for The Narrows. Spring is a different story: April and May are high-crowd months. See Zion in fall and Zion in spring.
Head for the Quieter Areas
Kolob Canyons is the park's remote northwest corner, well separated from Zion Canyon and the crowds along the scenic drive. The Taylor Creek Trail and Timber Creek Overlook are there. Kolob Terrace is a high plateau that runs cooler than the canyon floor; see Northgate Peaks. The east side has its own trade-off, since parking at Canyon Overlook is limited.
Summary Plan
- Start early and finish early, or come back for the late afternoon.
- Choose weekdays over weekends.
- Visit in winter, or aim for fall after Labor Day.
- Spend a day in Kolob Canyons.
