Best Time to Visit Zion
Zion is open year-round, and every season shows a different side of the canyon. But if you want the best balance of comfortable weather, flowing water, and crowds you can actually manage, two windows stand out.
The short answer: The best time to visit Zion is April-May and late September-October. You get mild days, cool nights, cottonwoods either leafing out or turning gold, and crowds that - while never truly light - are far more bearable than the summer peak. For the fewest people, come December-February and trade warmth for solitude and snow-dusted red rock.
Zion Season by Season
A quick read on each season - then dive into the full guide for the one you're planning around.
Spring (Mar-May)
The canyon comes alive - seasonal waterfalls run, hanging gardens bloom, and Emerald Pools are at their best. The catch: snowmelt swells the Virgin River, so The Narrows is often closed to wading in April and May. Spring break and holiday weekends get busy.
Zion in spring →Summer (Jun-Aug)
Peak season in every sense. Days top 100°F on the canyon floor, and afternoon monsoon storms bring flash-flood risk to slot canyons. Start hikes at dawn, carry more water than you think, and check the forecast before The Narrows or The Subway.
Zion in summer →Fall (Sep-Nov)
Arguably the finest time to visit. September and October bring warm-but-not-brutal days, low river flows perfect for The Narrows, and - by late October - brilliant fall color along the Virgin River. Crowds ease steadily after Labor Day.
Zion in fall →Winter (Dec-Feb)
The park's best-kept secret. Crowds vanish, lodging is cheapest, and fresh snow on the red cliffs is unforgettable. The shuttle usually pauses, so you can drive the scenic road yourself. Bring traction and layers - trails can be icy and days are short.
Zion in winter →Zion Weather & Crowds by Month
Average highs and lows are for the canyon floor near Springdale (~4,000 ft). Higher areas like Kolob Terrace run 10-20°F cooler.
| Month | Avg High / Low | Crowds | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 52° / 29°F | Low | Quietest month; snow possible, icy trails, shuttle off. |
| February | 57° / 31°F | Low | Still calm and cold; great light for photography. |
| March | 63° / 37°F | Moderate | Crowds build late month; shuttle season begins; waterfalls start. |
| April ★ | 73° / 43°F | High | Wildflowers, waterfalls - but high river closes The Narrows. |
| May ★ | 83° / 50°F | High | Warm and lush; Narrows often still closed to snowmelt. |
| June | 93° / 58°F | Peak | Hot and packed; hike at dawn. Narrows usually reopens. |
| July | 100° / 68°F | Peak | Hottest month; monsoon flash-flood risk in slots. |
| August | 97° / 66°F | Peak | Monsoon continues; watch forecasts closely. |
| September ★ | 91° / 57°F | High → Mod | Warm days, low river - prime Narrows. Crowds ease after Labor Day. |
| October ★ | 78° / 45°F | Moderate | The sweet spot: mild temps and peak fall color late month. |
| November | 63° / 34°F | Moderate → Low | Cooling fast, crowds thinning; shuttle winds down late month. |
| December | 53° / 29°F | Low | Peaceful and cheap; snow on the cliffs, short days. |

Crowds, Shuttle & Timing Notes
- Shuttle season: The Zion Canyon shuttle typically runs mid-March through late November and is mandatory up the scenic drive when operating. In winter you can drive your own vehicle up-canyon.
- Angels Landing permits: A day-use lottery is required year-round - a seasonal lottery months ahead, plus a day-before lottery. Plan for it in any season.
- Holiday spikes: Expect the biggest crowds around spring break (Mar-Apr), Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving weekend.
- Beat the rush: Enter the park before 8am or after 3pm, visit midweek, and consider basing in Hurricane or Kanab if Springdale is booked.

The best overall windows are April-May and late September-October - mild days, cool nights, and crowds that are far more bearable than the summer peak. For the fewest people, visit December-February and trade warmth for solitude and snow-dusted red rock.
What is the least crowded time to visit Zion?
December through February is the quietest stretch by far - crowds thin out, lodging is cheapest, and the shuttle usually pauses so you can drive the scenic road yourself. Year-round, weekdays beat weekends, and entering before 8 a.m. or after 3 p.m. avoids the worst of the rush.

What is the hottest month in Zion?
July is the hottest, with average highs around 100°F on the canyon floor. July and August also bring monsoon thunderstorms and flash-flood risk in slot canyons, so start hikes at dawn and always check the forecast before The Narrows or The Subway.
When is fall color in Zion?
Peak fall color usually arrives in late October, when the cottonwoods along the Virgin River turn gold. The exact timing shifts a week or two from year to year depending on temperatures.
Does the Zion shuttle run year-round?
No. The Zion Canyon shuttle typically runs from mid-March through late November, and when it is operating it is mandatory up the scenic drive. In winter the shuttle pauses and you can drive your own vehicle up-canyon.
