Overview

The Watchman Trail is the best moderate hike accessible directly from the Visitor Center - no shuttle, no permit, no waiting in line. The trail climbs a sandstone mesa to a viewpoint that looks out over the lower canyon, the Watchman formation, the Court of the Patriarchs, and the full sweep of Springdale and the Virgin River valley below. It's particularly popular for sunrise and sunset hikes when the canyon walls glow in warm orange and red light.

The trail is fully exposed and the terrain is sandy, rocky, and uneven in places. It's on the easier end of moderate - most regular hikers won't find it demanding - but the full sun exposure makes it feel significantly harder in summer heat.

Trail Route

The trailhead is at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, just east of the main entrance and parking area. The trail initially follows the Virgin River south, then turns east and begins climbing via a series of switchbacks up the face of a sandstone mesa.

About two-thirds of the way up, the trail levels briefly before a final push to the viewpoint - a broad, flat sandstone bench at the top of the mesa. From here you can see the Watchman formation to the southwest, the Towers of the Virgin to the north, Bridge Mountain to the east, and the whole of Springdale laid out in the valley below. Return the same way.

What You'll See

The views from the top are the main draw, but the trail itself passes through varied terrain worth paying attention to. In spring, desert wildflowers - including Indian paintbrush and prickly pear cactus blooms - brighten the sandy slopes. The lower section near the river is good for spotting wildlife: mule deer are commonly seen along the Virgin River corridor at dawn and dusk.

The Watchman itself - the distinctive sandstone tower that gives the trail its name - looks completely different from this angle than it does from the canyon floor, revealing its layered geology and the full mass of the formation.

Best Time to Go

This trail is exceptional at sunrise and sunset when the light on the canyon walls is dramatic. It's also one of the best early-morning hikes to beat the shuttle crowds - you can be done and back before the Visitor Center parking lot fills. Avoid midday in summer; the trail is fully exposed and temperatures on the mesa can be brutal. Spring and fall are ideal at any time of day.

Tips

  • No shuttle needed - start directly from the Visitor Center parking area, which is also the easiest parking in the park.
  • Fully exposed - bring sun protection, a hat, and at least 1.5 liters of water per person.
  • Great for sunset - the mesa viewpoint faces west and southwest, making it one of the best sunset spots in the park.
  • Sandy terrain - the upper section has loose sandy rock. Trail runners or hiking boots are better than sandals.
  • Campground connection - the trail passes near the Watchman Campground, making it a convenient evening hike for campers staying at that site.
