Zion in Fall

For a lot of people, fall is simply the best time to visit Zion. September and October bring warm-but-not-brutal days, the lowest, warmest river of the year for The Narrows, easing crowds after Labor Day, and - by late October - brilliant gold cottonwoods along the Virgin River.

The short version: Fall (September–November) is a sweet spot - comfortable temperatures, the best Narrows window, and thinning crowds. Aim for late October for peak fall color; by November, days cool fast and the shuttle winds down.

Weather & What to Expect

Fall cools off steadily. September still feels like summer - highs around 90°F - but the edge comes off through October (highs in the high 70s) and into November (low 60s, chilly nights near freezing). It's some of the most comfortable hiking weather of the year, especially mornings and evenings. Pack layers as the season progresses.

Why Fall Wins

Two things line up in fall. First, the Virgin River is at its friendliest - low and still relatively warm - making September and October the prime window for The Narrows. Second, crowds ease noticeably after Labor Day, so trails and shuttles feel calmer than in summer. Add mild temperatures and you get near-ideal conditions.

Fall Color in Zion

Zion's autumn color comes mainly from the cottonwoods along the Virgin River, which turn brilliant gold - usually peaking in late October, though the exact timing shifts a week or two from year to year with the temperatures. Bigtooth maples in side canyons add splashes of red and orange even earlier. The Riverside Walk, the Pa'rus Trail, and Zion Lodge's lawns are among the best places to catch it.

The Catch

Early September is still hot and busy - the real shift comes after Labor Day. And the season has a hard edge: the Zion Canyon shuttle typically stops running in late November, and daylight gets short, so late-fall trips need earlier starts and a plan around shuttle dates.

Best Things to Do in Fall

  • The Narrows - the year's best window for wading the river.
  • Chase fall color along the Riverside Walk and the Virgin River corridor in late October.
  • Angels Landing and other big climbs in comfortable temperatures (permit required).
  • Photography - warm light, gold cottonwoods, and thinner crowds.

Tips for a Fall Trip

  • Target late October for the color-and-comfort combo.
  • Check the shuttle calendar - it usually ends in late November.
  • Bring layers - warm afternoons, cold mornings, especially by November.
  • Weekdays are quieter than fall weekends. Where to stay near Zion →
