A Canyon Specialist

Unlike the owls of the open desert, the Mexican spotted owl is a creature of cool, narrow canyons. Zion's towering walls, shaded alcoves, and hanging gardens create exactly the damp, sheltered microclimate it needs - the same conditions that make places like the Narrows feel worlds cooler than the rim above. The park is considered important habitat for this threatened subspecies.

Where It Lives

Look - and more often, listen - in the deepest, coolest side canyons and north-facing walls, where shade lingers and the air stays moist. The owls roost by day on ledges and in alcoves, and hunt small mammals at night. Sightings are uncommon, and usually a matter of luck and quiet.

A Protected Species

The Mexican spotted owl is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, and it's highly sensitive to disturbance. To protect nesting sites, Zion closes certain canyons and routes seasonally - honoring those closures is one of the most direct ways visitors help the species survive. If you're lucky enough to find one, keep your distance and move on quietly.
