The Narrows

The world's most famous slot canyon hike - wading directly up the Virgin River through walls that soar 1,000 feet overhead and narrow to just 20 feet apart. The bottom-up route requires no permit. The top-down through-hike does.

Overview

The Narrows is unlike any hike in the American West. There is no trail - the river is the trail. You wade upstream through the Virgin River as the canyon walls close in until they're just 20 feet apart and over 1,000 feet tall. Light filters down from a thin strip of sky above, turning the water and stone into something otherworldly.

The most popular version - the bottom-up hike starting from the Temple of Sinawava - requires no permit and can be done by virtually anyone with proper gear and reasonable fitness. How far you go is entirely up to you: some wade for 30 minutes and turn around; others push all the way to Big Spring, nearly 5 miles in. A separate top-down through-hike of the full 16-mile canyon requires a wilderness permit and is one of the most demanding routes in the park.

Route Options

Bottom-Up (Most Popular) - No Permit Required

Start at the Temple of Sinawava (Shuttle Stop 9). Walk the paved Riverside Walk (1 mile) to where the canyon walls meet the river, then wade in. The route continues upstream as far as you like:

  • Wall Street (~1.5 miles in) - the most dramatic narrow section, where the canyon pinches to its tightest. A popular turnaround for casual hikers.
  • Mystery Canyon confluence (~2.5 miles in) - a side canyon on the left, often with a waterfall after rain.
  • Big Spring (~4.5 miles in) - the farthest point accessible without a permit, where a spring pours from the right-hand wall. Turn around here for a ~9-mile round trip.

Top-Down Through-Hike - Permit Required

For experienced hikers and canyoneers, the top-down route begins at Chamberlain's Ranch on the North Fork of the Virgin River and travels the full 16 miles (one way) through the canyon to the Temple of Sinawava. This route includes several deep swimming holes, technical sections, and campsite stays - it's a multi-day wilderness experience requiring a Zion National Park Wilderness permit. Only 40 permits are issued per day. The permit also covers the mandatory one-night camping option.

Flash flood warning: The Narrows closes when flow exceeds 150 CFS. Flash floods can develop rapidly from storms miles away. Always check the NPS conditions page before entering. Never enter during or after heavy rain upstream.

Water Conditions

The Virgin River fluctuates significantly by season and weather. CFS (cubic feet per second) is the key number:

  • 0-60 CFS - easy conditions, knee-deep or less in most sections
  • 60-90 CFS - moderate difficulty, thigh-deep wading, more current
  • 90-150 CFS - strenuous, not suitable for children or inexperienced hikers
  • 150+ CFS - trail closed by the park service

The Narrows is also closed entirely in spring during snowmelt - typically March through May depending on the year. Check current status at nps.gov/zion before planning your visit.

Gear - The Most Important Part

You will get wet. The question is whether you're comfortable when wet. The right gear transforms this hike from miserable to magical.

  • Waterproof footwear - the single most important item. The river bottom is slippery cobblestone. Canyon shoes, neoprene water shoes, or canyoneering boots all work. Sandals and regular hiking boots do not.
  • Trekking poles or a walking stick - essential for balance on the slippery river bottom. Many hikers rent wooden walking sticks from outfitters in Springdale.
  • Neoprene socks - the water is cold even in summer (around 65°F). Neoprene keeps your feet warm over a long day.
  • Dry bag or waterproof pack - your camera, phone, and extra clothing need to stay dry.
  • Layers - the canyon stays shady and cool. Even on hot days, a long-sleeve layer is useful.
Gear rental in Springdale: Several outfitters on the main road rent complete Narrows packages (canyon shoes, neoprene socks, walking stick, dry bag) for around $25-35/day. This is genuinely worth it even if you have hiking gear - standard boots become waterlogged and dangerous on wet cobblestone.

Best Time to Go

Late summer (July-September) is peak Narrows season - the river is typically low and warm after the spring closure, and afternoon thunderstorms add drama without always closing the canyon. Fall (October-November) is arguably the best time: low water, cooler air, gorgeous light, and far fewer people. Spring is typically closed due to snowmelt. Winter is possible but cold - waterproof drysuits recommended.

Top-Down Permit Info

Wilderness permits for the top-down through-hike are available at Recreation.gov via lottery. Only 40 permits are issued daily. Apply early - these go quickly, especially for summer and fall dates. The permit covers overnight camping at designated backcountry sites inside the canyon.
