A Quieter Base at Zion's Doorstep

Rockville sits along State Route 9 just west of Springdale - close enough to reach Zion's entrance in about ten minutes, but a world apart in feel. There are no shuttle crowds here and no strip of outfitters, just a small town of historic farmhouses, cottonwoods, and a landmark pin-arch bridge over the Virgin River. For travelers who want the canyon by day and quiet by night, it's an appealing - and often more affordable - alternative to staying right in Springdale.

Grafton Ghost Town - Just Across the River

Rockville's most famous neighbor is Grafton, widely called the most-photographed ghost town in the West. Reached by a short dirt road across the Virgin River, this preserved pioneer village - its 1886 adobe schoolhouse standing against the towering walls of Zion - has drawn painters, photographers, and filmmakers for generations. It's where the famous bicycle scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed, and it's free to visit.

Making Rockville Your Base

Staying in Rockville means a calm, dark-sky evening and a five-minute drive to Springdale's restaurants and the park shuttle. Lodging here leans toward inns, guest houses, and vacation rentals rather than big hotels, so it can be a good value - especially in peak season when Springdale fills up. You're also perfectly placed for the quieter southwest corner of the region: Grafton, the Smithsonian Butte backway, and the drive toward Zion's east side.
